fifteen year old
In America, a fifteen year old was caught stealing from a store. When he was caught, he even broke a shelf. In his attempt to escape from a gaurd
The judge heard the crime and asked the boy, "Did you really steal something, a packet of bread and cheese?"
The boy looked down and replied, "Yes."
Judge:'Why?'
Boy: I needed it.
Judge:'You could have bought it.
Boy:- 'I didn't have money.'
Judge: You could have borrowed it from your family. Boy: Only your mother is at home. She's sick and unemployed. I stole the bread and cheese for her.
Judge: Don't you do any work?
Boy: "I used to work at a car wash. I took a day off to take care of my mother, so I was fired."
Judge: Could you have asked someone for help?
Boy: I had left home in the morning, went to about fifty people, and at the very end took this step.
The cross-examination ended, and the judge began to pronounce his verdict, *Theft, and especially the theft of bread, is a shameful crime, and we are all responsible for it.* 'Everyone present in this court, including me, is guilty. Therefore, everyone present here is fined ten dollars. No one will be allowed to leave here without paying ten dollars.'
Saying this, the judge took out ten dollars from his pocket and kept it aside, then picked up a pen and started writing:- *In addition, I impose a fine of one thousand dollars on the store for treating a hungry child inhumanely and handing him over to the police.
If the fine is not deposited within twenty-four hours, the court will order sealing of the store.
By giving the full amount of fine to this boy, the court seeks an apology from that boy.
After the verdict was announced, not only were the people in the courtroom in tears, but the boy also began to sob. He repeatedly glanced at the judge, who then walked out, hiding his tears.
Are our society, system, and courts ready for such a decision?
Chanakya has said that if a hungry person is caught stealing bread, then the people of that country should be ashamed.
